University of Maryland full and part-time faculty and
staff can now receive pretax transportation benefits that help off-set the cost
of their commute from home to work on any type of public transportation in the
area.
If you regularly use public transit, this program is a benefit for you! You can save hundreds of dollars annually because you won’t pay Federal and state income taxes on the money you spend on commuting. "Metrochek" is a Federal program that allows you to use pre-tax dollars for the cost of commuting by public transit. You simply deduct, through automated payroll deduction, the amount you typically use in commuting each month. Then, you receive a "Metrochek" voucher for that same amount of money. You use these vouchers to pay for your transit fares. More than 100 area rail, bus, and vanpool commuter services are participating, including MARC, Ride-On, Connect-A-Ride, Metrorail, and Metrobus. So with this program, you avoid the expense of taxes up to an established dollar amount because you deduct your commuting costs pre-tax from your paycheck.
Enroll by completing a payroll deduction form from your Departmental Parking Coordinator. You can cancel your payroll deductions at anytime. Find more information at www.wmata.com/metrochek or call the University Department of Transportation Services at 301-314-4537. |
