If you live close enough, walking is one of the most convenient ways to get where you want to go!

Start slowly by walking one or two days a week and gradually build up to walking full-time. Select a good pair of walking shoes and appropriate clothing. Contact the Center for Health and Wellbeing at 301-314-1493 or see www.umd.edu/health/chwb for more information regarding the benefits associated with regular walking.

Walking Safety

bulletUse sidewalks, crosswalks, and signaled intersections in areas with heavy traffic.
bulletWalk in well-lit areas both in business communities and neighborhoods.
bulletIf walking at dawn or dusk, wear bright clothing and consider reflective wrist or leg bands.
bulletFor books and heavy work items, use a good backpack or wheeled cart.

If you live approximately two miles from campus, this is a great option for you.
