UMD and BikeUMD wants to encourage everyone to get on a bicycle and ride. There are many benefits of riding including physical, environmental, and even monetary. But who needs a reason when it’s fun and enjoyable to grab those handlebars and go? The weather is warming up and there will be many great biking days ahead. If you haven't heard, the university has been awarded Gold status as a Bicycle Friendly University. There are many bike resources the campus has to offer. Come join us for Bike Week, March 31st through April 7th, and get in the biking spirit. Below you can find all the scheduled programs for the entire week.

Bike & Camp Pocahontas State Park

  • Saturday, March 31st - Sunday, April 1st
  • Registration required
  • Spend an exhilarating weekend mountain biking the singletrack trails of Central Virginia’s Pocahontas State Park. Located just outside of Richmond, Pocahontas State Park is home to over 64 miles of trail and over 25 miles are dedicated to directional mountain biking. After a day of biking, you’ll be able to relax around the campfire and rest up for another day of exploring the park by bike.

Bike Week Kick-off Event at STAMP

  • Monday, April 2nd from 10AM - Noon at the STAMP (southest entrance)
  • Giveaway: Bike Helmet
  • Bike Week is here! Join BikeUMD to kick off a week full of fun bike rides, classes and activities! Stop by to get a free bicycle helmet, cotton candy and the opportunity to have a RecWell Bike Shop bike mechanic make sure your bike is in tip-top shape with a free safety check.

Bike Week Bike Maintenance Class

  • Monday, April 2nd from 6PM - 8PM at RecWell Bike Shop
  • Registration required - Giveaway: Tire Levers
  • Come learn the essentials of bike maintenance in this free Bike Week Bike Maintenance Class! Sponsored by the RecWell Adventure Program and DOTS.

Bike Commuter Breakfast

  • Tuesday, April 3rd from 8AM - 10AM at Bike Commuter Lot (bottom level of Regents Drive Garage)
  • Giveaway: Coffee & Bagels
  • Come have free breakfast with the Bike Coordinator and your fellow bike commuters! We will have bagels and coffee from 8AM to 10AM in the bike parking facility inside Regents Drive Garage on the bottom level across from the RecWell fitness studio

Learn to Ride

  • Tuesday, April 3rd from 4PM - 7PM at RecWell Bike Shop
  • Registration required - Giveaway: Bike Helmet
  • This clinic is for individuals who have never ridden a bike before and are looking to start. Certified instructors take students through a progressive curriculum with the goal of riding with two pedals by the end of the clinic. Our technique is intuitive and has a very high success rate. Bike and helmet rental are provided.

Bike Safety Lunch & Learn

  • Wednesday, April 4th from Noon - 1PM at Transportation Services Conference Room
  • Registration required - Giveaway: Lunch & Bike Lights
  • Come learn about bike traffic laws and how to safely bike around campus with free lunch! In the DOTS conference room at Regents Drive Garage.

Safe Cycling Essentials

  • Wednesday, April 4th from 4PM - 7PM at RecWell Bike Shop
  • Registration required - Giveaway: BikeUMD Socks
  • Come learn the recommended techniques for riding your bicycle in a variety of areas and conditions. This clinic will cover trail riding, riding in traffic, and riding in a group with other cyclists. Bring your own bike or borrow one from the RecWell Bike Shop. All participants will receive a free pair of blinky bike lights for participating in this clinic. Helmets required.

Bike Week Scavenger Hunt

  • Thursday, April 5th from 9:30AM - 3:30PM across UMD Campus
  • Raffle Prize: Wireless Waterproof Portable Speakers
  • Are you aware of all the bike resources UMD has to offer? Than this scavenger hunt should be simple. If you don't, here's a great way to find out. This scavenger hunt can be completed by any student with or without a bicycle. If you want to try out UMD's mBike bikeshare for FREE use the "visitUMD" promo code. To start this scavenger hunt follow/add DOTS_UMD on Instagram or Snapchat and watch our STORY for further directions and the first clue. At the end of the day we will select a random winner from everyone who completed the scavenger hunt before 3:30PM.

Bike Scream Social

  • Thanks to our sponsor Graduate Student Life in celebrating Graduate Student Appreciation Week
  • Friday, April 6th from 3PM - 5PM at RecWell Bike Shop
  • Giveaway: Ice Cream
  • I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! And a bike ride! Join us for ice cream sundaes and a fun group ride through campus where you can ask all your bikey questions and practice your street riding. No bike? We can help you request a mBike or just come have ice cream and talk to us about biking on campus. Email us at if you need a bike.

Intro to Mountain Biking Trip at Rosaryville State Park

  • Saturday, April 7th
  • Registration Begins March 26th: Register
  • This trip is designed to give participants the required knowledge and skills to safely and successfully enjoy the sport of mountain biking. Rosaryville State Park is a great place to learn while enjoying the twisty trails. Bicycle and helmet provided.
