Bike Commuter Program

Given the congestion and high cost of parking on campus, commuting to work or school at UMD is a particularly attractive option. BikeUMD strives to support all cyclists who choose to commute to campus by bicycle. The following initiatives are intended to support, celebrate, and create community among bicycle commuters:

Bike Commuter Mornings

Join one of several groups of cyclists commuting to campus the first Wednesday of every month. Convoys leave from Silver Spring, Colombia Heights, and Greenbelt at 7:30 AM. During the school year, all convoys rendezvous at the Stamp for Good Morning Commuters breakfast hosted by the office of Transfer and Off-Campus Student Life. This event is free and no sign-up is necessary.

The Bicycle Coordinator from the Department of Transportation Services at the University of Maryland is available to help you determine the best route to get from your home to campus. E-mail bike@umd.edu.

Friday Morning Coffee Club

Join bike commuters every Friday morning at the Coffee Shop in Stamp for the Friday Morning Coffee Club. Meet other cyclists, compare routes, and build community. Starting Fall, 2015.

Showers for Bike Commuters

There are showers for cyclists to use at many buildings across campus. Cyclists may obtain a shower pass from University Recreation & Wellness to shower at Ritchie Coliseum by contacting Lawrence Moody, Ritchie Facility Manager, at lpm@umd.edu. Other buildings, such as the Van Munching Building and Cole Fieldhouse, have showers specifically for students and employees of departments housed in those facilities. Contact bike@umd.edu to figure out the most accessible shower location for you.
