Bike Rentals

The RecWell Bike Shop provides a variety of bike rental services to the University of Maryland community. Community members can rent out a bike for the day, for a week, or for an entire semester. Check out your options below:

Daily Bike Rental: $10

Come by the RecWell Bike Shop and ride away on a well-tuned hybrid or hard-tail mountain bike. This 24-hour rental includes a helmet and lock. Ride a hybrid bike (a Trek Allant, Fuji Absolute, or Fuji Crosstown) to a local park, to the grocery store, or even all the way to Downtown Washington, DC! Take a mountain bike (a Fuji Tahoe) out on one of the many local single-track trail systems within an hours’ drive from campus. Either way, you’re guaranteed to have a great day with our bike.

Week-long Bike Rental: $30

Want to keep the bike a little longer? Get any of the bikes mentioned above for an entire week for the low price of $30. Helmet and lock are included.

Semester Bike Rental: $75

For folks who want to use a bike to get around campus, but don’t want the responsibility of owning or maintaining their own bike, the RecWell Bike Shop offers a limited number of Semester Bike Rentals each session. For $75 you get one of our hybrid bikes (a Trek Allant, Fuji Absolute, or Fuji Crosstown) and a lock. more »


Classes and Clinics

The RecWell Bike Shop offers a variety of bike classes and clinics each semester. Some that are offered regularly are listed below. Click here for the most recently updated list of available classes and clinics.

Introduction to Bike Maintenance

This four-session class provides an introduction to the basics of bicycle maintenance and repair. Topics covered include flat tire repair, brake adjustment, brake pad replacement, drive-train maintenance and repair, and an introduction to hubs, bottom brackets, and headsets. more »

Mountain Bike Skills Clinic

This two-session class gives participants an introduction and overview of the sport of Mountain Biking. The first session focuses on bike handling skills in a controlled, classroom environment. For the second session the group goes out to a local single-track trail to put their newly learned skills into practice. Class fee is $20 and size is limited to eight participants.

Safe City Cycling

This three hour clinic covers the basics of safely riding your bike in an urban / suburban environment. The instructors assume no prior knowledge, but have good tips and reminders for cyclists of all experience levels. more »

Learn to Ride

This three-hour class is for individuals who have never ridden a bike before and want to start now. Certified instructors take students through a progressive curriculum with the goal of riding with two pedals by the end of the class.more »

Recreation and Wellness Bike Rides

The RecWell Bike Shop, a service supported by the department of University Recreation and Wellness, offers a number of different bike rides each session. Descriptions of some of our most popular rides are listed below. Please click here for the most recently updated list of scheduled rides.

Bike the DC Monuments and Memorials

Join the RecWell Bike Shop for a sunset ride among some of Washington DC’s most famous landmarks! Ride leaders will set an easy pace and provide opportunities to stop at various monuments and memorials along the ride. Transportation for you and your bicycle to and from downtown DC is included. The group will depart from at 6 PM and return by 10:00 PM. The cost of the trip is $15 / person and group size is limited to eight participants.

Participate in the RecWell Bike Shop’s biking / yoga hybrid program. A 30-minute bike ride will warm you up for a 35-45 minute yoga session at the pavilion of Lake Artemesia lead by a RecWell Group Fitness instructor. A cool down period and a short bike ride back to campus will leave you feeling invigorated and refreshed. This event is free and open to the UMD community.

RecWell Shop Social Ride

Join a group of students from the RecWell Bike Shop for a casual ride on some of the area’s best bike trails. This relaxed event is a great opportunity to explore the local community and make new friends! more »

Custom Ride

The RecWell Bike Shop is happy to help plan and lead a custom ride for your group or organization. Whether it’s a short ride around College Park or a longer excursion, we have the resources and know-how to make sure your perfect bike ride goes off without a hitch.

Bike Commuter Program

Given the congestion and high cost of parking on campus, commuting to work or school at UMD is a particularly attractive option. BikeUMD strives to support all cyclists who choose to commute to campus by bicycle. The following initiatives are intended to support, celebrate, and create community among bicycle commuters:

Bike Commuter Mornings

Join one of several groups of cyclists commuting to campus the first Wednesday of every month. Convoys leave from Silver Spring, Colombia Heights, and Greenbelt at 7:30 AM. During the school year, all convoys rendezvous at the Stamp for Good Morning Commuters breakfast hosted by the office of Transfer and Off-Campus Student Life. This event is free and no sign-up is necessary.

Commuter Route Planning

The Bicycle Coordinator from the Department of Transportation Services at the University of Maryland is available to help you determine the best route to get from your home to campus. E-mail

Friday Morning Coffee Club

Join bike commuters every Friday morning at the Coffee Shop in Stamp for the Friday Morning Coffee Club. Meet other cyclists, compare routes, and build community. Starting Fall, 2015.

Showers for Bike Commuters

There are showers for cyclists to use at many buildings across campus. Cyclists may obtain a shower pass from University Recreation & Wellness to shower at Ritchie Coliseum by contacting Lawrence Moody, Ritchie Facility Manager, at Other buildings, such as the Van Munching Building and Cole Fieldhouse, have showers specifically for students and employees of departments housed in those facilities.
