The Department of Transportation Services continues to be committed to the development of both the students and full-time employees that work for us. Many of our student employees go on to work full-time for us after graduation. This year alone we hired a student employee full-time into our IT department and our Shuttle Management department.
Student Drivers (continuously hiring)
DOTS Shuttle-UM drivers provide safe, dependable, on-time transportation to University of Maryland students, faculty, and staff. The position involves paid training, flexible hours, and advancement opportunities. Drivers earn $9.25/hr during training, which increases to $12.50/hr after completion of training and CDL licensing.
Student BikeUMD Assistant
Job Type/Requirements: $9.75/hr; 4-8 hrs a week; Part time; Undergraduate
The BikeUMD Assistant reports to the Campus Bicycle Coordinator, assisting the Coordinator in monitoring and maintaining cycling infrastructure on the University of Maryland Campus and enhancing its cycling culture. Duties include supporting events, regularly checking bike racks on campus for abandoned bikes under the Coordinator's direction, assisting the Coordinator in removal of abandoned bikes, assisting the Coordinator in maintaining database and records, assisting the Coordinator in preparing for Bicycle Safety Month (October), and implementing Bicycle Safety Month content. Other duties may be assigned.
Student IT Programmer
Job Type/Requirements: $16-20/hr; Part time; Undergraduate
This position will serve as a web developer and programmer to support the web environment and departmental applications. Under general supervision, the web developer and programmer provide installation, configuration and support of DOTS as well as develop, implement and maintain in-house applications. On a regular basis, complex SQL queries will need to be written to supply information for business processes.
This position will work with the Assistant Director of IT and other programmers to create IT based policies and procedures and will work with a variety of University staff and students.
Student Graphic Designer
Job Type/Requirements: $10.75/hr; Part time; Undergraduate : Currently enrolled in Maryland's Graphic Design program.
Under the direction of the Graphics Coordinator, the Graphic Design Student assists in creating design solutions that will aid the effective dissemination of departmental information and marketing strategies. The Graphic Design Student will conceptualize designs and develop a wide range of print and web-based communication materials.
This position also assists the Marketing Assistants in representing the department at University-sponsored events and assist with the Shuttle-UM advertising program.
This position pays $10.75/hr and requires employment during the summer and a weekly commitment of 10–15 hours to be worked during standard office hours (M-F, 9:00 – 5:00). Occasional weekend work required.
Student Program Assisstant
Job Type/Requirements: $9.75/hr; Part time; Undergraduate Students only
This position will assist the Training Coordinator in planning and managing employee programs and events for the Department of Transportation Services. This position requires an outgoing individual that will brainstorm activities and ideas for collaborative efforts throughout the department. Additionally, this position will work on diversity awareness for staff such as, facilitating small group conversations, creating a monthly diversity board, researching diversity related articles, and planning diversity field trips.
Student Special Events
Job Type/Requirements: $11.50 shift differential; Part time; Undergraduate Students only
The Student Special Events position is a very hands-on job that is perfect for outgoing and friendly students who want a position that offers more than just working behind a desk. This position requires a minimum of 10 regularly scheduled hours per week during the semester (Monday-Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.). Available to work on call some evenings and weekends totaling approximately 10 hours per week. Limited Winter/Summer term hours available as needed. Must work all MD home football games and men’s home basketball games.
Student Sign Shop Assistant
Job Type/Requirements: $9.75/hr; Part time;
Under the direction of the Sign Shop Specialist, the Student Sign Shop Assistant will assist in production of all materials that come out of the DOTS Sign Shop. The Student Sign Shop Assistant will assist in the design & layout of files, operating all devices within the sign shop, production of signage, and posting banners and advertisements across campus. This position requires a weekly commitment of 10–15 hours of work during standard office hours (8:00 – 4:00). This position requires physical activity and may require lifting of heavy objects not to exceed 40 lbs.
