Parking for Customers with Disabilities
Display your current valid University of Maryland, College Park, Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) parking permit in conjunction with your State-issued license plates, placard, and/or hanging permit when parked on campus at disabled spaces and/or unpaid single-head meter spaces.
If you use the DMV hanging permit, display this permit from your vehicle’s rearview mirror. Please display DOTS parking permit on the driver’s side of your vehicle’s dashboard with lot assignment and control number facing the window.
Please read the following guidelines:
- WHO...Only persons authorized to display valid State issued disabled license plates, placards, and/or hanging permits on their vehicle(s) identifying driver or passenger as disabled.
- WHAT...A current valid, DOTS permit must be purchased by students, faculty, staff and visitors. See Item 6 for more information.
- WHY...Once a parking permit has been purchased, the disabled permits/license plates override the lot assignment with regard to parking convenience.
- WHERE...Disabled permits/license plates are valid in disabled spaces, at any unpaid single-head meter space, or in any non-gated surface lot space (Items 2 and 6 apply). Disabled permits/license plates are not valid in fire lanes, courier spaces, service spaces, Zipcar spaces, state vehicle spaces, or metered spaces controlled by multi-space paystations. Disabled permits/license plates do not authorize free parking in cashier-attended areas.
- WHEN...The individual with the disability must be in the vehicle at the time that the vehicle is parked. If the driver drops off a disabled individual, he/she is not permitted to then park in a disabled space.
- METER PARKING FOR VISITORS...Maryland law allows for free parking at single-space meters for up to a maxi mum of 4 hours or two meter time durations for vehicles displaying current valid State-issued license plates, placards, and/or hanging permit. If it is an eight-hour single-space meter, the individual may only park at the meter for four hours. If it is a one-hour single-space meter, the individual may only park at the meter for two hours.
- DIGITAL PAY STATIONS…The Digital Pay Stations on campus meet the requirements for the Americans with Disabilities Act. Disabled permits/license plates do not authorize free parking in Digital Pay Station areas.
- PARATRANSIT SERVICE...Paratransit provides rides to campus locations for students, faculty/staff, and visitors with mobility needs. Please call (301) 314-2255 for more information.
- QUESTIONS...Please call DOTS at (301)314-PARK between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday Friday with questions or visit our Web site.
